Real Conversations: Waiting on God in the Adoption Journey (featuring Jessica)

Today I interviewed a dear friend Jessica and she shared about how often in the process of building her family, she and her husband Paul have needed to wait on God.  Waiting has been such an integral part of their story and waiting times have turned out to be one of the most treasured parts of their journey.

After years of waiting to get married, years of waiting to have kids while her husband went to law school, years waiting to be old enough to apply to adopt from their country of choice, and then after four different attempts to adopt, the Lord finally answered: by shutting the door to adoption.

Sometimes at the end of our waiting times, God’s answer is no.

In the end, with the shutting of the adoption door, God opened a different one that was way better than Jessica ever expected and now her family has become a foster family.  Sharing in the stories of children needing a family, has become a beautiful aspect of Jessica’s life and she feels like the waiting times prepared her to fully embrace this calling of being a foster Mom.

She now sees how she is living in the mission field that she is supposed to be in, tying in every desire and experience of her life together.

Listen in to the whole interview here as we talk about what it means to trust God’s timing.

Perseverance in waiting

These are a few key points we talked about relating to persevering through waiting on God:

  • Waiting is a vital part of the journey that God has us on.  God grows the foundations in waiting years.

  • God is IN the waiting times.

  • The waiting time WILL end.

  • Your story is not over yet.  You are not alone.

  • Be real and vulnerable about the emotions you are facing while you wait- and have a community around you to share that with.

Quote from Jessica relating to unanswered prayers

Tips for those waiting to adopt/thinking of fostering:

  • The waiting is vital.

  • Start going to counseling early on in the process.

  • Community, especially when you are waiting, is huge.

  • If you are considering fostering: DO IT.

“It’s everything I wanted, but I didn’t know it would be part of my journey.” quote from Jessica regarding her family’s journey to fostering

Questions to ask yourself:

Am I prepared for God to say NO, to the thing I’m waiting for?

What is God trying to teach you in the waiting time?

What are some of the barriers to accepting God’s timing in your life?  What are some barriers to believing that God does have a perfect timing for all things?
